Smuggler Residence

A sensitive yet sophisticated remodel transformed this miner's cabin from the 1800s into a cozy winter retreat where three generations of family can gather in comfort and style.

Built 1892
Sq.Ft. 3,578

The owners of this historic gem from the late 1800s wanted to retain the unique elements of the original home while creating a bright, open space that aligned with their tastes and active lifestyles. Matter Interiors created a cozy and opulent setting for family gatherings by highlighting key architectural details and combining Victorian-inflected details with modern, durable and beautiful materials.

VISION

Matter Interiors set out to achieve an artful melding of history and modernity for this residence. A tone-on-tone palette in rich materials such as whitewashed, locally sourced pine and natural stone along with venetian plaster walls and thoughtful lighting details creates a sleek, modern aesthetic while exposed plumbing, floor-mounted faucets, and vessel sinks in the primary bathroom are a playful nod to the cabin's Victorian roots. Flipping the layout in both the kitchen and master suite promoted functional storage, entertaining and ease of living.

Execution

Working closely with bg Architecture and Design, Matter integrated original features, such as the home's beautiful peaked ceilings, into the new design, including a dramatic glass shower in the top-floor primary bathroom. Low-maintenance tile and custom millwork in the home's signature, whitewashed pine was deployed extensively in the entryway, kitchen and dining room to create clean sightlines, a unified aesthetic and a place for all the accoutrements of an active, outdoor life.

Detail

The homeowners wanted a kitchen space that invited morning gatherings with their children and grandchildren. Details such as the recessed cooktop vent, push-latch drawers and a hidden coffee bar complete with espresso machine, pull-out tray, and electrical outlets create a clean, serene backdrop and an uninterrupted flow for the morning's activities. The unusual soft lavender tone of the natural stone used for the kitchen island became a color inspiration that appears subtly throughout the home.
